This exhibition features works by Satoru Aoyama. Included are detailed drawings of his studio, a number of sketch-like drawings created with a sewing machine, and an animated collaboration with his artist friend Jin Kurashige. In a different approach from his previous exhibitions, he has created an installation with a room full of drawings accompanied by an animation piece.
Aoyama is concerned about our tendency to rely on technological advancement. Technology has surely brought convenience to our life, and yet potentially can lessen the creativity and sensitivity that we are born with. The stitch patterns on his drawings created with the sewing machine are a symbol of industrialization in the 19th century, but could also be associated with computer pixels, a critical pointer to the inherent rationalism in modernity.
This exhibition, "Crowing in the Studio," raises questions regarding the relationship between technology and tradition in art and society at large, rather than conveying simply the production process. Aoyama also ventures into new personal territory by incorporating his imagination, through which he refers to his own identity.
