Alfie Goodrich
Photographer Alfie Goodrich was born in Canterbury, England. After three years of studying photography and film in Manchester and Plymouth, UK, Alfie left college to find work, ending up at Nimbus Records, a small, independent record label in the Welsh countryside where he spent the next nine years, ending up as Director of PR. Then followed eighteen months as General Manager of Black Box Music in London, leaving as the record company was sold to a major label to set up his own graphic and web-design business back in Wales. Alfie has been visiting Japan since 1999/2000 and moved to Tokyo with his wife and their two children permanently in October 2007.

Since moving to Japan, Alfie has put much of his design work aside to concentrate on developing [excuse the pun] a career as a full-time photojournalist. He was recently taken under contract as a photographer and writer by the Nippon News agency and his first feature - Tokyo Taxis by Night - has been published in a number of publications outside of Japan. The September 19th issue of Metropolis carried one of Alfie's taxi shots on its cover to accompany an article inside the magazine which featured more of his images.

This exhibition concentrates on images shot at the maximum aperture of some of the Nikon lenses that Alfie shoots with, some of the fastest lenses in the company's range including the 50mm f/1.2 and the 85mm f/1.4. Shooting "wide open" with such large apertures results in a very shallow depth of focus and a characteristic 'bokeh' [out of focus-ness] which has come to typify a lot of Alfie's work. The speed of the lenses also opens up superb opportunities for shots of people at night. And we all know how
fascinating Tokyo is at night. As well as great people shots there are a number of stunning nature pieces which celebrate the beauty in even the most mundane or miniscule of urban nature in Tokyo.

Please come and see his wonderful work from 6pm, enjoy the live music of the Pink Cow's famous "Cow Jam" from 7pm and put your hands in your pockets for what is undoubtedly some of the best food in town. As Alfie says: "Anyone who has been both the Head Chef of the QE2 liner and London's Institute of Directors, is a chef whose food HAS to be worth trying.... and the Pink Cow menu is DEFINITELY worth trying."
