Koichi Nabatame was born in 1933 in Hitachikana City, Ibaraki Prefecture. After being selected for inclusion in the 35th Saiko 35th Inten Exhibition while still a high school student, he exhibited widely at a variety of exhibitions including the Nitten, nurturing his talent from an early age. After graduation, Nabatame chose to become an businessman, but continued to remain active as a painter. In his forties, he exhibited mainly at the Saiko Inten, winning the Nihon Bijutsu Insho three times and becoming part of the exclusive Nihon Bijutsuin in 1990.
Nabatame paints mostly seasonal flowers such as peonies and landscapes. His works are born out of a sincere encounter with his chosen subjects in an attempt to grasp their essence, while always maintaining a rather severe and serious attitude. Although the basis of this painting is photorealism, his works also possess a rich sense of lyricism and imagination.
This exhibition focuses on 61 nihonga paintings ranging from works dating from his high school days and the Nitten exhibitions right up to his latest works. In addition, numerous drafts and sketches are also on display, making this effectively a 60 year retrospective of Nabatame's artistry. These works feature familiar landscapes that typically go overlooked, silent, dream-like fantastical spaces, suffused with a sense of supple life-force that is intimately bound up with the earth.
