"Arts and Crafts Movement in the UK and USA" Exhibition

Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art
Finished
The Arts and Crafts movement influenced all sorts of objects in everyday life. William Morris (1834-1896) was the central figure who developed the theoretical backbone of this movement. He disliked mass production and thought highly of the craftsmanship of unknown artisans in medieval times. He established his firm to produce all kinds of interior design elements such as stained glass, wallpaper, furniture, fabric and metalwork. His attitude influenced latter generations of architects and artists in England, and eventually those in Japan, Europe, and America, spurring on a large cultural movement.
This exhibition presents a total of 150 works created by Morris and other English artists who participated in the Arts and Crafts exhibition in 1888, as well as Glaswegian artists including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and finally American artists Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright. Through a wide range of works such as silver plates, ceramics, lighting fixtures, textiles, furniture, jewelry and publications, this exhibition aims to introduce audiences to the process of international expansion of this modern architecture and design movement.
