Kazuo Takiguchi is a contemporary ceramicist whose work overflows with vigor. He was born in Gojozaka, Kyoto, where Shimizu-yaki, a type of traditional ceramic art, was born. His abstract forms have won much acclaim in Japan as well as abroad. He studied ceramics in Britain, after which he discovered that his inspiration comes from the Japanese language itself. Since then, he has been creating works mostly based on words.
For instance, Takiguchi's glazed white ceramic box has Japanese words written directly on it: translated, they roughly mean "Seeing White Clouds Below." This piece was created by reflecting on his experience of seeing the shadow of the airplane he was on cast on white clouds. Upon closer inspection, small grains of sand can be seen through the white glaze, perhaps a representation of the land beneath the clouds.
