"Visions of Namban, Illusion of Koumou" Exhibition

Fuchu Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Yumeji Takehisa, Kayo Matsumoto, Senrei Mitsuro, Sumio Kawakami et al.
The word "Namban" referred to Portugal and Spain during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1603), when the Portugese and Spanish often made visits to Japan. The word "Koumou" was used to refer to the Dutch, the only one country allowed to enter Japan in the Edo period (1603-1868). In the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan started to modernize through contact with European countries, and some people began to show interest in the old customs and history surrounding "Namban" and "Koumou."

This exhibition presents works inspired by the old stories surrounding "Namban" and "Koumou." Featured works present a sense of romanticism toward the old times. Artifacts and documents regarding "Namban" and "Koumou" are also shown along with the artworks, introducing the historical background of this artistic trend.
