Hisashi Tenmyouya
Hisashi Tenmyouya is known for his satirical work that makes use of traditional Japanese drawing and painting techniques and subject matter while taking an ironic stance towards contemporary society. His consistent artistic position, which takes traditional techniques and modes of thought as a starting point and inflects them ironically, has garnered many fans. In recent years, Tenmyouya has exhibited both in Japan and internationally and pursued a wide variety of activities in various fields. He designed the official art posters for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, acted as art director for Hitoshi Matsumoto's film "Dai Nippon Jin", produced illustrations for serial novels published in the morning edition Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper, and participated in an art publishing project for the 12th IAAF World Athletics Championship in Berlin.
This exhibition features a total of 6 new works that have not been previously exhibited, focusing on large-scale pieces measuring 3 meters across.
Showing at the 5th floor space are original illustrations created by Tenmyouya for the Kenzo Kitakata novel "Path of Nostalgia" (currently being serialized, August 2008), a year-long serialization being published in the morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper starting August 6th 2007. This series of some 400 illustrations in sumi ink deftly captures the inner workings of the characters in the novel and provides viewers with a glimpse into a new aspect of Tenmyouya's artistry.
These new works were born out of a blend of particular Japanese aesthetics cultivated before Tenmyouya was influenced by Western culture, and the artist's own artistic sensibility. They evoke a tense, somewhat strained sense of quietude, like the calm before a storm.
