This year, 2008, marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Eikyu Matsuoka (1881-1938). The Nihonga painter was renowned for his revival of the Yamato-e painting style, which had begun in the Heian period. Upon the 70th anniversary of Eikyu’s death, we are pleased to present this exhibition looking back on the careers of Eikyu and his disciples.

Eikyu had a profound understanding of Japanese history and culture, as did his brothers, Japanese studies specialist Michiyasu Inoue, ethnologist Kunio Yanagida, and linguistics scholar Shizuo Matsuoka. Eikyu was renowned as a talented educator while serving as a professor at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo Fine Arts School); artists such as Hoshun Yamaguchi, Tadao Yoshimura, Kyujin Yamamoto, Meiji Hashimoto, Yasushi Sugiyama, and Tatsuo Takayama were among his many students.

As seen in his major works during the Taisho through Showa periods, including Taking Shelter from the Rain and a Visit in Yamashina (from the Tale of Times Now Past), Eikyu explored the stylistic potential found in ancient handscrolls. His students then continued that exploration, delving into an even broader array of free stylistic devices. Working in collaboration with his teacher Eikyu, Tadao Yoshimura completed the Tsutsuizutsu: Scenes from the Tale of Ise (Collaboration). Hoshun Yamaguchi in his Autumn Leaves and Meiji Hashimoto in his Moonlight Night developed modern palettes and decorative qualities, while selecting their subject matter from Yamato-e classics. Sugiyama’s After the Rain and Tatsuo Takayama’s Mid-autumn both express uniquely stylized beauty in their impressionistic renderings of a single moment in time.

The approximately 50 works in this exhibition, which at first glance seem to be completely different in nature, all share the "Yamato-e spirit" and the essence of Eikyu and his network of disciples.
