"Okinawa Textiles" Exhibition

Japan Folk-Craft Museum
Finished
In 1938, 2 years after founding this Museum, Muneyoshi Yanagi visited Okinawa for the first time and was struck by the beauty of Okinawan textiles. Yanagi visited the site three more times before 1940. This exhibition features Okinawan textile work that Yanagi and his fellows collected upon their visits. A variety of materials, such as cotton, silk and ramie were dyed in vibrant indigo, pink and yellow, and then woven by versatile techniques.
