"Masayoshi Hotta: The Lord Who Strived for Japan-U.S. Friendship" Exhibition

Sakura City Museum of Art
Finished
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the Japan-U.S. Treaty of Friendship and Commerce, which was realized by Masayoshi Hotta, the lord of the Sakura domain, who negotiated with the U.S. envoy Townsend Harris as a councilor of the Shogunate.

Researches in the past mainly proved the achievements of Naosuke II, new Tairo of the time, while they didn't pay enough attention to Hotta's contributions. Recently, however, his involvement in the treaty negotiations has been reevaluated, and his efforts became to be widely applauded.

This exhibition showcases precious items of Hotta family and historical documents in an attempt to introduce and acknowledge accomplishments of this important figure as well as to revalue Sakura as a place which turned out excellent individuals.
