Artists

Gijs Bakker
Gijs Bakker (b.1942) founded Droog Design in 1993 and has long been a leader of the Dutch design scene, while also remaining active as an industrial designer. In conjunction with the exhibition held at the first overseas Droog shop that opened this June in Ebisu, Tokyo, Gallery Deux Poissons is hosting a solo show by Gijs Bakker showcasing his jewelry works.
Entitled "Real?", this exhibition features the "Real?" series launched in Amsterdam this spring as well as the previous "Real" series. For this first "Real" series, Bakker created brooches and rings that are miniature "imitations" made by metalsmiths using real precious stones; "imitations," in fact, of "original" off-the-shelf costume jewelry made out of artificial stones.
In the following "Real?" series, pieces of costume jewelry were warped, cut and broken, and then shaped into brand new pieces. Thus Bakker repeatedly challenges his audience with the slender, sometimes unlocatable difference between real and fake. Such chain-reaction questioning, deriving from his use of found objects and a focus on handiwork, is exhibited in a straightforward manner in a series of works he created for Droog Design. With his critical view of ready-made and throwaway jewelry and the environment surrounding them, this pioneering artist will give viewers an opportunity to ask themselves universal questions about value and originality.
