Ukiyo-e Belgian Royal Collection Exhibition

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished
The Royal Museums of Art and History of Belgium (RMAH) and the Royal Library of Belgium (RLB) are known for their outstanding ukiyo-e collections. The RMAH collection is mainly from Edmond Michotte (1830-1913), and the total number of pieces now stands at around 7500. Also, some pieces from over 500 works from the RLB collection gathered from the late 19th century will here be shown for the first time in Japan.

There are some museums with larger ukiyo-e collections than RMAH and RLB, such as the Boston Museum, which has 50000 pieces, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, which has 25000 pieces. However, what makes the RMAH and RLB collections unique is the remarkable state of their preservation. Because the colors of ukiyo-e fade easily, it is really rare that pictures printed during the Edo period have retained the quality and brightness of that time.

This exhibition features around 150 pieces, including works exhibited for the first time in Japan by Sharaku, Utamaro, Harunobu, Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kunisada, and Kuniyoshi.
