Isaburo Ueno + Lizzi "From Vienna to Kyoto, From Architecture to Crafts"

Meguro Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Isaburo Ueno, Felice "Lizzi" Ueno-Rix
Isaburo Ueno (1892-1972) is a founding member of the Kansai region's pioneering group called the International Architecture Association of Japan, who invited architect Brune Taut to see Japanese architecture. In 1925, Ueno got married with Felice "Lizzi" Ueno-Rix (1893-1967), and Lizzi moved to Japan. Using the knowledge and creative skills she acquired at Josef Hoffmann's Vienna Studio, Lizzi contributed to the development of Japanese modern architecture. This exhibition aims to present the remarkable achievements the couple has brought in the fields of architecture and design in Japan.

The central work in this exhibition is archived documents that show Isaburo and Lizzi's projects and activities. In 2006, these works were donated to the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto by the International Design Research Institute (currently the Kyoto Interactive School of Art), where the couple laid out a unique educational method. The works include their entire archive of relevant works and documents, including a complete collection of International Architecture, the magazine produced by the International Architecture Association of Japan.
