A historian once had it that "human beings are made for play." Prior to the desire to create culture, he maintained, was a deep-seated impulse to play - as with word-chain games, the fun of connecting one unrelated thing to another; playing house, acting out a different role in another world; the feeling of liberation and vertigo as one takes off on a swing; the sensation of realizing that something familiar can be replaced by something completely different when puzzling over the answer to a riddle. These experiences of play are indubitably linked to the desire for expression. Artists, in particular, might be said to be people who continue to sharpen this faculty for play even after becoming "adults."

This exhibition showcases various models for expression that lie within the act of playing in an attempt to discover connections between art and the everyday. Many artists from the younger generation who began making work starting from the 1990s and early 2000s incorporate within their practice elements that could be said to be an extension of "play." This special exhibition features both old and new works by two young Japanese artists who have forged brilliant careers in recent years - Zon Ito and Teppei Kaneuji.
