"Sharaku - His Original Painting" Exhibition

Edo-Tokyo Museum
Finished

Artists

Toshusai Sharaku et al.
The Asian Art Museum of Corfu, located on Corfu Island, Greece, was designated a World Heritage Site in 2007. The museum houses over 10,000 works of art collected in Paris and Vienna by Gregorius Manos, a Greek ambassador based in Vienna, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, a period that saw the flourishing of Japonisme in these two cities.

This collection was stowed away almost completely unexhibited for an entire century. However, after extensive scholarly research conducted by Japanese researchers in July 2008, the enigmatic ukiyo-e artist Toshusai Sharaku's original fan painting was discovered. This work was supposedly painted in May 1795 after Sharaku ended his career as a woodblock artist. The discovery had a great impact on existing research related to the artist. Alongside this work, ukiyo-e prints by Kitagawa Utamaro and Katsushika Hokusai, as well as a life-size reproduction of folding screen painting by Kano Tanyu were discovered, revealing the whole picture regarding these hidden treasures in Greece.

Showcasing around 120 ukiyo-e and other paintings from the voluminous collection, this exhibition introduces audiences to the fruits of diligent research. This is the first time that Sharaku's original painting is being exhibited to the public either in Japan or abroad.
