Kyosuke Chinai

Kyosuke Chinai was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1948. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Chinai developed his distinctive style of painting on washi paper with acrylic, transcending the boundaries of pre-existing styles. He established his own imaginative world that shows the traditional Japanese aesthetic of "mono no aware", meaning "an empathy toward things," by incorporating patterns used in clothes and "kachofugetsu," traditional nature motifs. Chinai, as a "western-style" painter, tackled Japanese aesthetic with absolutely original methodology. He received a number of prizes including the Yasui Award, establishing his career in the Japanese modern art world. Ever since he created illustrations for novelist Tomiko Miyao's serialized novel that appeared in Mainichi Newspaper in 1992, Yasui became widely known by the public.

Yasui held solo exhibitions at Gallery Tamenaga in France in 2002 and 2004, selling works to major collectors in Europe. Since then he has been exhibiting worldwide. His recent works are landscape paintings of flowers and mountains that are rooted in Japan, winning much acclaim internationally. This exhibition showcases around 40 paintings including his most recent works.
