Hiroji Kubota "A Portrait of Asia : Dye-Transfer Prints Collection"

Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts
Finished

Artists

Hiroji Kubota
83 photographs by the only Japanese member of Magnum, Hiroji Kubota, who traveled the world for over 40 years to take his photographs.

Room 1 will show 48 dye-transfer prints selected from a large body of work produced over a period of 15 years. Dye transfer is characteristic for its unique deep tonality that requires experience and skill and that cannot be imitated by any other printing method. The prints have been produced by Nino Monde who Kubota admires as a "contemporary ukiyoe painter". The prints may be understood as a collaboration of the photographer's vision and the printer's artifice.

Room 2 will show 35 photographs taken around Asia on the theme of what Kubota regards as the greatest problem that we face in the 21st century, namely the sustainability of food. 150 contacts of photographs taken in North Korea and China will also be on display in the museum.
