Hiroko Masuko was born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1982. She graduated from the department of art education of the graduate school at the Miyagi University of Education, and currently lives in Tochigi Prefecture. While still a graduate student in 2007, Masuko participated actively in open call exhibitions like the Hitotsubo and Tokyo Wonder Wall exhibitions, and received several nominations and prizes. She also held a large scale solo exhibition at Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo this February.
Masuko has focused on bonsai as a motif, producing delicate and detailed pen drawings. The bonsai in her works are sometimes in the midst of rampant growth, sometimes presenting a more traditional aspect, and occasionally even displaying certain animal-like "evolutions." Her ambitious "Bonsai Sword" work, showcased at Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo and the 101 Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair, won her rave reviews, opening up a new path in her practice.
This exhibition, one year after her first solo exhibition in 2008 at Gallery Jin, represents a new "adventure" for Masuko, whose theme here is "bonsai sword legend." On display are 10 finely detailed pen drawings.
