Ukiyo-e is one of the forms of arts that the popular culture in the Edo era gave birth to.
During the 200 years of "ukiyo", or in other words the ever-changing customs and culture that reflect the hedonistic tendencies in Edo era society, was vividly captured in paintings and prints. Paintings of women are particularly meticulous in the depiction of clothes and other details. The kosode worn by the models are drawn in such detail that bespeak of the minute care that the painters took in observing the fashion of the day.
This exhibition presents ukiyo-e paintings from the early to late Edo period, retracing the transition in Edo fashion.
