Shuzo Sawa
Shuzo Sawa has been taking photos of "omizu-tori" held at Nigatsu-do in Todaiji Temple, Nara prefecture, since 1978. Signifying the coming of spring, this event has been carried out since the Nara period between March 1st and March 14th, 6 times a day. On the first night of the event, 10 huge torches weighing about 40 kilograms each are brought up to the site, while even larger ones weighing up to 80 kilograms are lit on the 12th night. Sawa captured dynamic scenes of this ceremony by combining various photographic techniques. Around 30 color photos are on view.
