Collector Haruki Terumura donated a total of 331 works that he accumulated over 30 years to the Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki in 2007 and 2008.
The central works of the Terumura collection are Naobumi Seimiya's poetic woodblock prints. This artist only produced a very small number of editions that are occasionally printed in different colors and also vary because he made some adjustments to the printing block from time to time. As a result his prints are very rare and difficult to acquire. In addition, Terunuma's collection includes many of Tomoaki Hamada's copperplate prints that depict the turmoil of postwar Japan, as well as copperplate prints by Yukio Hideshima who expressed in these works his self-reflective, internal world. Furthermore, he also purchased many prize-winning works by young artists he found at competitions, a gesture of support for new talent.
A total of 270 works that include many of the works Terunuma donated, as well as works that are on loan to the museum, are on display in this exhibition. A life surrounded by one's favorite artworks is the ultimate joy of an art collector. Terunuma decided to share these works that once filled his private rooms with a larger audience. This exhibition aims to shed light on his generous attitude toward art appreciation, and also traces the history of postwar Japanese printmaking through his collection.
