"Establishing Modern Art in Japan - From Taikan Yokoyama to Ikuo Hirayama" Exhibition

Yamatane Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Taikan Yokoyama, Ikuo Hirayama et al.
The collection of the Yamatane Museum of Art, known for its rich holdings of modern Japanese nihonga painting, includes an especially noteworthy section of works by artists from the Japan Art Institute, founded by Tenshin Okakura in 1898. These painters studied traditional painting while also absorbing influences from European art and other Eastern traditions, creating free-spirited artworks with a strong individual character and fresh perspective. This exhibition traces the development of modern Japanese painting through a showcase of works by artists such as Taikan Yokoyama and Yuki Ogura. In addition, a special selection of works by Ikuo Hirayama, who unfortunately passed away last December, will be on display as a tribute to the late master.
