The time for the Hina Doll’s Festival has come to Nihonbashi. In this annual exhibition “Hina Dolls of the Mitsui Family”, dolls and furniture once belonging to Motoko (1869-1946), the wife of Mitsui Takamine (10th generation head of the Kita Mitsui family); Toshiko (1901-1976), the wife of Mitsui Takakimi (11th generation head); and Okiko (1900-1980), the wife of Mitsui Takahisa (9th generation head of the Isarago Mitsui family) are on display together with gorgeous Hina dolls on a tiered stand formerly possessed by Ms. Asano Hisako, the only daughter of Takakimi. The display features delicate Hina dolls made by Ōki Heizō, the doll artisan of Kyoto, and Eitokusai, a widely known dolls store in Nihonbashi.
The special display “Japanese Dolls from the Yoshitoku collection” commemorates the 300th anniversary of Yoshitoku, the oldest doll wholesale store in Tokyo, which was founded in 1711. The story of Japanese dolls is told through Hina dolls and other masterpieces from old to new.
The Yoshitoku Collection is one of Japan’s leading doll collections and consists of dolls, related literature and paintings collected by Yamada Tokubē (1896-1983), the tenth generation of Yoshitoku who wrote many books as a doll researcher.
In exhibition room 1-3, a spring assortment of tea utensils from the Mitsui Memorial Museum’s collection are also on display. We hope you enjoy the glorious spring festival of Hinamatsuri at this historic location in the Nihonbashi “Jikken-dana” area, which used to have a Hina doll market at this time of year during the Edo period.
