"Grave and Elegant: Ancient Chinese Mirrors from Murakami Eiji & Decorations for the Japanese Doll Festival from Takeda Tsunemasa" Exhibition

The Nezu Museum
Finished
Works from two donated collections are on display.

In Gallery 1:
Ancient Chinese Mirrors from Murakami Eiji
Murakami Eiji presented a large number of ancient Chinese bronze mirrors from his renowned collection to the Nezu Museum. This exhibition pays tribute to this generosity through a showcase of all 80 donated works, featuring vividly decorated masterpieces from the Tang dynasty.

In Gallery 2:
Decorations for the Japanese Doll Festival from Takeda Tsunetada
The current generation of the former Takedanomiya aristocratic family has generously donated approximately 70 examples of doll festival furnishings that were previously presented to their ancestor Princess Masako, the sixth daughter of Emperor Meiji, from her parents the Meiji Emperor and Empress. The pieces include elegant Emperor and Empress dolls, their astonishingly intricate miniature furnishings, and Odai dolls that were said to have been enjoyed only by children of the Imperial household. While many early doll and furnishings collections have been scattered and lost over time, this is a rare set that remained intact. This exhibition marks the first public display of these dolls and their furnishings that still fascinate us today, a century after young princesses of the Imperial court enjoyed them.
