At the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka, there is a screening room—the Saturn Theater--where screenings of original animated short films are held.
What started with two animated shorts at the Museum’s opening in 2001 has gradually expanded to a total of seven, with two more to be completed within the year. The new special exhibition which begins in May will feature exhibits based on all seven of these unique animated short films. It will be housed in the museum’s Special Exhibit Room using three-dimensional displays and two-dimensional color panels.
The seven films each differ in style and appeal. From a story inspired by a Japanese folk tale about mice, to an underwater love story drawn with as much detail and with almost as many animation frames per second as a feature length film. There is also a film in which all sound and sound effects are depicted as lettering on the screen, and another about the adventures of Mei from “My Neighbor Totoro”. Then, there are stories about a lost puppy’s big adventure, and the power of imagination of small children playing “pretend” based on the classic children’s book “No-No Nursery”.
The colorful variety of films being featured will turn the Special Exhibit Room into a child’s chest of toys turned upside down. Three-dimensional displays that bring each film to life will be on view and visitors will be welcome to touch and even sit on them. We hope that visitors will feel that they have entered the world of the films.
The Special Exhibition will be held in 2 phases.
During the first phase (May 22 to November 8, 2010), three-dimensional displays of the seven animated shorts will be displayed in the Special Exhibit Room, and one of the seven completed films will be screened every two weeks at the Saturn Theater. Under this new screening schedule, we hope that our visitors will be able to catch as many of our short films as possible during this period.
During the second phase (November 20, 2010 to May 2011), the two newly completed animated short films currently under production will be introduced in the Special Exhibit Room replacing some of the displays featured in the first phase. The new short films will also be screened in the Saturn Theatre. We hope that you will look forward to the new films.
Many stories gradually appear in front of your eyes.
