Artists

Hiro Kurata
In his solo show held at the Gallery Common in July, 2011, Kurata presents approximately fifteen acrylic paintings and drawings created with his new techniques involving the usage of vivid colors. He has continually drawn the image of the hero. The concept for this show was initiated when Kurata asked himself whether the hero could indeed do something good for the world.

Kurata said: “The people are fighting without noticing a gigantic monster behind them, which is approaching from the sea while a boat sinks in the stormy weather. This is a question about whether two baseball players will save the people, or keep playing their game.” As the title of the show, “Play the Right Game” implies, Kurata tries not to suggest that the hero should play the right game, but reminds us that each individual should keep it in his or her mind to do the right thing; a very simple, yet oft-neglected truth. It is probable that Kurata became aware of this fact via the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, in which people thought about what they could do to help the victims, and acted accordingly.

Kurata currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
