Yukichi Watabe
In 1958, Yukichi Watabe was granted special permission to photograph police investigations into a series of murders that occurred in Ibaraki Prefecture. Over the course of two weeks of stakeouts and interrogations, Watabe captured both rookie and veteran detectives in film noir-like settings. After being almost forgotten for more than 50 years, these photos were rediscovered and released by a French publisher last year as a lavishly bound monograph, which was nominated for the International Photobook Award. This exhibition showcases new prints from conserved films.
