Shibata Zeshin
Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891) was a makie lacquer and painting artist active in the transitional period from the late Edo period through the first few decades of the Meiji era. Unlike most traditional lacquer artists, Zeshin studied both lacquer arts and painting. He created his own unique production process that featured his own personal involvement at all stages, from preparatory underdrawing to final makie decoration application. Box (Tebako) with Five Seasonal Festivals Design (Suntory Museum of Art) is one of many chic and elegant works born of this process. Zeshin also produced paintings combining his art techniques in a unique form of lacquer painting on paper, not the usual hard media.

While there have been many introductions in Japan of Zeshin’s works from overseas collections, this will be the first exhibition in approximately 30 years that highlights 120 superb examples of Zeshin’s works in Japanese collections. Through its superb selection of works from Japanese collections, this exhibition will introduce viewers to the entire breadth of the oeuvre of this superb modern decorative arts creator.
