"Cosmetics of Edo Period Beauties in Ukiyo-e Prints" Exhibition

New Otani Art Museum
Finished
Cosmetics and makeup techniques used during the Edo period consisted mostly of white powder, rouge, tooth blackening substances, and eyebrow shaping. Makeup styles were determined by social rules and conventions, and were an indication of social status, age, and marital status. This exhibition showcases ukiyo-e prints and makeup implements that introduce viewers to the cosmetics of the Edo period.
