Tamako Kataoka "The Secrets of Creativity: Nihonga Sketchbook"

Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura
Finished

Artists

Tamako Kataoka
Tamako Kataoka spent roughly 80 years producing imaginative and uninhibited Japanese-style paintings until her death at age 103. Remaining sketches in pencil, watercolor, pastel, and felt pen evoke the inspiration and emotion that existed from the onset of her creative process. This exhibition displays 50 of Kataoka’s works, including both sketches and completed paintings. Comparisons between her sketches and finished pieces offer a glimpse into the wellspring of her originality.
