Akira Nagasawa
Completing a graduate degree in Nihonga at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1994, Akira Nagasawa has since had his work displayed in both domestic and international group and solo shows, attracting attention as a contemporary artists at MOT Annual 2006 “No Border- From Nihonga to Nihonga.” Studies abroad in Europe gave him direct experience with Europe’s modern art and artist processes, causing him to reflect on his own work and harbor doubts about its context in art history and the concepts behind it. To put distance between himself and the “meaning” of his work, he took up tigers as a motif because of their far removal from everyday life. His tiger figures have an air of ancient stateliness reduced to abstract beastliness, filling exhibition spaces with enormous presence.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, Nagasawa began painting whales and birds, as if expressing liberation from the fear and oppression of some overwhelmingly huge presence. In addition to tiger, whale, and bird paintings, this solo show focuses on new works, along with “Mantra,” a collage of giant drawings, and early works drawn with straw ash on Japanese paper. Driven by the same pure and primitive instincts as our ancestors who felt compelled to create art on cave walls while they worried about food and feared nature and enemies, Nagasawa’s works are an exultation of finite life.
