Museum’s Choice 4: Kuboku Takaku’s “Poppies”

Nagoya obi sashes are tied more simply than double-woven obis typically paired with formal kimonos. Depending on the material and patterns, they can be worn both casually and for dressier occassions. The Nagoya obis of the Tochigi-born dye artist Kuboku Takuto became popular in the post-war period. This exhibition introduces his “Poppies” obi featuring a floral motif of translucent colors that appears to be drawn but is actually batik-dyed on woven silk.
