Masao Sato
Masao Sato (b.1963) creates work filled with mystery yet imbued with a simultaneous nostalgia of an image seen once before. Even in his very early career, still studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, he was actively holding solo exhibitions and gaining recognition through a series of awards. Since then he has continued to widen his practice beyond oil painting to encompass sculpture, video and spatial design, showing widely across Japan and internationally. His images draw from the landscapes of this hometown Sakata, Yamagata prefecture while also incorporating scenes of local festivities and the strangely surreal, and while these depictions may appear to be intimidating, they are motifs which are engrained in Japan’s cultural history and rooted in the hearts of its inhabitants. This exhibition takes up the theme of “home” as formed through the relations between one person and other, including a collection of new work.
