Published from 1972 in the girls’ weekly manga magazine “Margaret” (Shueisha), “La Rose de Versailles,” tells the tragedy of Marie Antoinette and the beautiful cross-dressing woman Oscar. Both historically accurate and gorgeously written and illustrated, the immensely popular series inspired a still-running production by Takarazuka Revue from 1974. The story aired as a TV animation series in 1979. A parody by original creator Riyoko Ikeda, “BeruBara Kids,” debuted in Asahi Shimbun “be” in 2005, captivating new generations of readers.

For the 40th anniversary of the original series, this exhibition tells the full history of “La Rose de Versailles,” showcasing its comics, stage production materials, films, and “BeruBara Kids” artwork. A total of 300 items are on display, including valuable original manga manuscripts, celluloid pictures from the first animation series, and character model sheets. Visitors can also see a recreated version of the elaborate Takarazuka Revue stage as they revisit this dramatic tale of interwoven love and revolution.
