Katsuji Matsumoto

Illustrator and product designer Katsuji Matsumoto was responsible for much of the Showa era’s culture of cuteness. Along with Junichi Nakahara, his drawings for popular girls’ magazines left behind a legacy of manga artwork from the early Showa period.

This exhibition traces the rise of girls’ manga in the early Showa era with examples of Matsumoto’s comics and magazine inserts. It also presents works by artists influenced by Matsumoto, including Toshiko Ueda and Setsuko Tamura, demonstrating the considerable impact Matsumoto had on post-war girls’ manga and girls’ culture. Several of his other romantic and lyrical illustrations are also on display.
