Hiroshige Utagawa
The rich lyricism of Hiroshige’s “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”. The Tokaido was the route linking Edo (now Tokyo) to the imperial capital, Kyoto, making steady progress through the Edo period to become a flourishing passway of daimyos, peddlers and merchants selling local products, and townspeople making pilgrimages to temples and shrines. Through his scenes Hiroshige skillfully depicts the local landscapes along this route filled with travelers and working people.
This exhibition features Hiroshige’s first 55 works in the Hoeido edition together with some of his later-produced works in the Gyosho(semi-cursive) and the Reisho(clerical script) styles.
