Vocaloid Opera “The End”

Bunkamura Orchard Hall
Finished

Artists

Keiichiro Shibuya, Miku Hatsune
“The End” is a stunning new opera formed through the collaboration of musician/artist Keiichiro Shibuya, performer Kishiki Ogata, film maker YKBK and a range of other leading artists of the times. This opera is an opera without human presence, without the appearance of a human singer or orchestra, but rather with the arias and recitatives of Hatsune Miku and vocaloids, the generated sound of computers and a narrative built up through moving image. Within the grand Orchard Hall renowned for its classical music and opera performances, this team utilizes the fortress of digital resources at their disposal in a 10.2 channel surround sound system and 10,000 lumen projection system, to enter the journey of Hatsune Miku in a self questioning of “Will I die?” Through the medium of Hatsune Miku the structure of tragedy found in traditional opera and its questioning of death is revised for the contemporary day. A whole host of big names are making their contribution to this masterpiece including the artistic director of Louis Vuitton Mark Jacobs and his studio team who have Hatsune Miku’s stage costumes, developing original designs based on their Spring/Summer Collection and damier motif, creating a whole new image for this digital character in an unprecedented collaboration. Head of Rem Koolhaas’ New York office, architect Shohei Shigematsu has also contributed to the stage design of this much anticipated performance while Yuni Yoshida has undertaken artistic direction of the illustrations used as the basis of YKBX’s essential visuals.
