Yasunari Kawabata, the first Japanese winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, had a rare eye for beauty. The paintings of Kaii Higashiyama are an integral part of the Kawabata Collection, first opened to the public in 2002, thirty years after the great writer’s death. This exhibition presents resonating works of literature and art by these two pillars of the Showa era, with pieces from the Kawabata Collection, which contains three national treasures, and the Higashiyama Collection, which had long been closed to the public. It offers a comprehensive look at works by Higashiyama held by both collections. The pieces are accompanied by the words of both Higashiyama and Kawabata in this exhibition introducing their worlds of concordant beauty.
