Artists

Shoichi Futami
Shoichi Futami (b. 1932) was one of the pillars of post-war Japanese copper engraving. The subtle expressions of his aquatint etchings evoke a dream-like lyricism with penetrating power. Futami donated more than 100 of his works to the museum in 2009, and this exhibition introduces the artist’s world with around 300 of his prints and other works, including donations to the collection. These are works which quietly move the heart, created by an artist who steered Japan’s postwar art scene without being swept away in its currents.
