Yuichiro Tanaka has been shooting and publishing photos of cities since the second half of the 1990s. Brimming with the eclectic mix of images that make up the urban environment, his works are accumulated fragments of the cities he continues to doggedly explore on foot. He came out with the photo collection “Atlas” in 2007 and has since continued to present his work at exhibitions. He published a five-volume compilation of his oeuvre in 2009. This exhibition presents selected prints from this large collection, continuing in Tanaka’s tradition of producing black and white photographs, mainly of Tokyo. Aiming to be both a map and an assembly of iconic images, “Atlas” is not a disjointed archive of past works, but an opportunity to experience unfamiliar parts of the city through photographs imbued with the artist’s thoughts.
