Artists

Yasunori Taninaka
Yasunori Taninaka(1897-1946) was a print artist highly activate in the 1930s, a time when Tokyo had rebuilt itself from the Great Earthquake and had begun to flourish under a modern image, but also coinciding with movements towards wartime order accompanied by many restrictions and uncertainties. Taninaka depicted the new face of this grand city with a mix of memory, imagination, dream and reality through his woodblock prints, filling scenes with buildings, theaters, planes, submarines, robots and scenes from foreign movies merged with Buddhist iconography and nature. Here a kaleidoscope of 300 works make up the first major retrospective of Taninaka’s creative practice in 10 years examining the relation between political and social change and expression.
