The Soul of Japan— The Calligraphy of Mitsuo Aida and the Photography of Taikichi Irie

Ashikaga Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Mitsuo Aida, Taikichi Irie
Calligrapher Mitsuo Aida produced many profound works in Ashikaga, a place rich in both history and nature. Meanwhile, Taikichi Irie devoted his life to photographing the natural environment and Buddha statues of Nara’s Yamatoji, considered to be the heartland of Japan. Aida’s studio contains photographs of Buddhist statues thought to have been taken by Taikichi Irie. The unique expressions of these two artists who believed in working in their hometowns reveal the traditional soul of Japan. Works by both are on display in this exhibition searching for a “soul of Japan” to be carried on into the future.
