“The Craft of the 7 Seas - Vol. 4 - The Gulf of Guinea and the Adire of the Yoruba People”

In the 4th volume in this series introducing the lifestyles of people living upon the sea through craft a special feature is given to the Yoruba people, who live mainly around the Nigerian region of the Gulf of Guinea, and their tie dyeing craft of “Adire”. This form of dyeing was originally for a form of wrap dress and was passed down from mother to daughter over generations. In recent years households with the facilities for dyeing have dwindled but as part of wedding presents adire still remains an essential item. This exhibition features a collection of adire, craft items of the Yoruba people and moving image documenting the techniques of dyeing, as well as accompanying workshops and talk events, allowing visitors to appreciate a craft form which appears to capture the very waves of the sea in its form.
