Tessai Tomioka
Tessai Tomioka, active as a confucian scholar and artist was a master of literati painting in modern Japan. Originating in China, literati paintings were made for the enjoyment of intellectuals, often depicting an utopia and a land of immortals described in literature. From the turbulent end of the Edo period through the Taisho period, Tessai Tomioka carried on the spirit of literati painting, establishing his unique style while pursuing a dynamism interweaving black ink and colors. This exhibition introduces some 70 paintings spanning the career of this creative artist, demonstrating his stirring brushwork and subtle expressions.
