The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo is showing “Guess what? Hardcore Contemporary Art’s Truly a World Treasure: Selected Works from the Yageo Foundation Collection” through August 24th. It showcases works that are globally top-notch both in terms of their market values and their places in art history. Hiroshi Sugimoto, Marc Quinn, Gerhard Richter, Ron Mueck, and Andreas Gursky are among the preeminent artists on its roster. Yet— we must ask why some works of contemporary art, including those on display, become so astronomically valued. “Where does their worth come from?,” many wonder. Simply from people saying they are “world class?” Who estimates their values? Under what social circumstances are they appraised? What meanings do they take on within the contexts of art history?
This talk welcomes Tomio Koyama, director of Tomio Koyama Gallery— which has given the world first-rate artists such as Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara— and Kenjiro Hosaka, curator of the current exhibition. Koyama and Hosaka will speak about the typically unfamiliar structure of the art market from the perspectives of gallerists and curators, providing insight into how contemporary art is appraised and how its value is created. It offers the chance to consider the meaning and value of contemporary art in the contemporary world we live in.
