Launched with the aim of “supporting areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake”, Sainensho is a group of Kyoto-based ceramicists led by Toshio Matsui, a fashion design professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Sainensho takes old ceramics imbued with many memories and fires them at 1,300 degrees for several hours in an anagama kiln in Kyotango, Kyoto. This process melds the ceramics together, erasing their designs, producing beautiful glass, and reshaping them through the transformations of firing. All proceeds from sales of these works will support creative activities in Tohoku.
