The Hyakudan Kaidan (Stairway of 100 Steps), the only wooden structure currently in existence at the Meguro Gajoen, was designated as a Tokyo Tangible Cultural Asset in 2009. The stairway is famous for 126 major works of Japanese painting from the early Showa era, which surround seven gorgeous rooms decorated by summertime illuminations in themes of scenes loved by the Japanese people, such as “The Light of Japanese Festivals,” The Light of Japanese Paper,” and “Light Shining on Flora.” The venue’s public spaces and restaurants also feature spectacles of “Wa no Akari” (Japanese light), for a total of twelve elegant summer illumination displays. This is the first time photography will be permitted throughout exhibition hours, allowing guests to commemorate their viewing of these scenic Japanese lights that add to the splendor of a cultural asset.
