Ukiyoe flourished for a time in the Edo period as highly original artists enjoyed brilliant careers. Focusing on the leading bijinga artist Utamaro Kitagawa, this exhibition introduces the delights of ukiyoe with 135 works including originals by masters such as Sharaku Toshusai and Toyokuni Utagawa, popular contemporaries of Utamaro. In cooperation with the Kimono Culture Museum Japan, there is also a special display of clothing and hair combs worn by courtesans depicted in ukiyoe prints.
