120 Years Since the Birth of Michisei Kono and Kenichi Nakamura

Koganei City Hakenomori Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Michisei Kono, Kenichi Nakamura
The Western-style painters Michisei Kono and Kenichi Nakamura were both born in 1895 and spent the latter halves of their lives in Koganei, Tokyo. However, because of the considerable differences in their artistic styles, backgrounds, and years in which they produced their major works, they are not often considered “contemporaries” as such, and are rarely paired in discussions of modern Western art history. This exhibition marking the 120th anniversary of Kono and Nakamura’s births contrasts the two artists while exploring their similarities with a selection of paintings drawn mainly from the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum, a collection with many works by both.
