Yasutake Funakoshi “Looking Beyond”

Nerima Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Yasutake Funakoshi
Born in Iwate prefecture, Yasutake Funakoshi was enchanted by Rodin as a child and first took up marble sculpture in 1940 while living in Nerima ward. From 1950 he established his unique style in a series of works informed by Catholic imagery and came to be recognized as one of the leading sculptors of post-war Japan. In 1987 his right half of his body was paralyzed by illness but even for 10 years after this he continued to make work using only his left hand with a new force of energy. This exhibition provides a retrospective of Funakoshi’s work with early sculptures from his time in Nerima to major works and unseen drawings, providing an overview of the career of this figurative sculptor.
